As filmagens foram obtidas através de um software, o PC Rental Agent, desenvolvido pela empresa Designerware, tendo sido encontradas as filmagens em computadores de sete empresas diferentes que se dedicam ao aluguer de computadores.
Ainda segundo as informações das autoridades norte-americanas, o software foi descoberto em mais de 1.600 lojas sendo que se estima que tenha sido instalado em mais de 420 mil computadores nos Estados Unidos.
A Comissão Federal de Comércio refere que o aspecto mais nocivo do software está no sistema Detective Mode, que é ativado sempre que os utilizadores não devolvem os computadores alugados dentro do prazo, ou quando não pagam pela sua utilizacao.
De referir que a Comissão Federal de Comércio já decidiu quais as coimas a aplicar e que as empresas visadas vão continuar a ser vigiadas ao longo dos próximos 20 anos, período em que têm de confirmar que não possuem o software instalado nos computadores de aluguer.
