Silverlight is a powerful development platform for creating engaging, interactive user experiences for Web, Desktop and mobile applications when online or offline. The application is a free Web-browser plug-in powered by the .NET framework that is compatible across multiple browsers, devices and operating systems to bring a new level of interactivity wherever the Web works. With support for advanced data integration, multithreading, HD video using IIS Smooth Streaming, and built in content protection, Silverlight enables online and offline applications for a broad range of business and consumer scenarios. All Silverlight runtimes support rich media capabilities and enable fast, cost-effective delivery of high-quality audio and video to all major browsers running on the Mac or on Windows. The designer experience remains largely the same for all runtimes as well. The main difference resides in the developer experience.

Silverlight 5 is a powerful tool for creating and delivering rich Internet applications and media experiences on the Web. It makes further advances in media, 3D visualization and application development and user experience, adding over 40 new features. The Release provides developers their first opportunity to start exploring these new capabilities.
The Silverlight 5 toolkit, downloadable from CodePlex, adds additional features, including the 3d project templates. The toolkit is not installed as part of the main tools installer, so make sure you install it from here.
Supported Browsers all major browsers, including Opera, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer.
Supported operating systems: Mac OS X, Windows 8, Windows 7, Server 2003, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012 Essentials, Vista, Windows XP SP3.

- Fixes an issue where persistent license acquisition would fail when a customer upgrades from Silverlight 4 to Silverlight 5.
- Fixes an issue where certain character combinations can cause Silverlight application to crash.

- Fixes an issue where the SL5 plugin displays blank window after installing a font with a font name that starts with “&”.
- Fixes an issue where moving a focus to TextBox or RichTextBox after moving a focus to ItemsControl causes IME to be disabled.
- Fixes an issue where Silverlight would not play content which required Output Protection.
- Fixes a Silverlight DRM issue where some customers encounter hardware ID mismatch errors which can only be resolved by re-individualization.
